Energy Stocks: Exxon, Chevron slip as energy sector falls

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) ? Shares of Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron Corp. and other energy companies fell Monday in line with the broader market which headed south on the heels of weak U.S. jobs data.

Exxon /quotes/zigman/203975/quotes/nls/xom XOM -0.83% ?lost 0.8% to $84.16, while Chevron /quotes/zigman/289939/quotes/nls/cvx CVX -0.74% ? also declined 0.8% to $103.89. Both companies are components of the Dow Jones Industrial Average /quotes/zigman/627449 DJIA -0.71% , which tumbled 105.39 points to 12,954.15.

Data released by the government last Friday showed the U.S. added 120,000 jobs in March, the weakest in five months. The anemic figure triggered worries about the strength of the U.S. recovery. Read U.S. economy gains 120,000 jobs in March.

The NYSE Arca Oil Index /quotes/zigman/6015539 XX:XOI -0.85% slid 1.1% and the NYSE Arca Natural Gas /quotes/zigman/6015474 XX:XNG -1.38% skidded 1.7%. The Philadelphia Oil Service Index /quotes/zigman/1470028 OSX -0.98% ?lost 1.2%.

Exxon, Chevron among Dow 30 laggards so far in 2012.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, crude oil futures for May delivery /quotes/zigman/2203141 CLK2 -0.82% fell $1.90, or 1.8%, to $101.41 a barrel.

Among energy companies on the S&P 500, WPX Energy Inc. /quotes/zigman/7648245/quotes/nls/wpx WPX -3.28% was one of the biggest decliners, losing nearly 5%.

Anadarko Petroleum Corp. /quotes/zigman/217978/quotes/nls/apc APC -2.65% ?and Chesapeake Energy Corp. /quotes/zigman/126832/quotes/nls/chk CHK -2.68% both lost more than 3%.

Marathon Petroleum Corp. /quotes/zigman/5611608/quotes/nls/mpc MPC +1.29% ?was the lone gainer in the sector, adding 0.7%.
