Bluetooth dock dongle Pear falls short of Apple certification, gets shelved

Bluetooth dock dongle Pear falls short of Apple certification, gets shelved

Last summer, Pear promised to make pairing iDevices via Bluetooth to an Apple-compatible speaker dock easy, but caught a trademark snag that put it on hold shortly after. The adapter seemed destined for a release under a different moniker, but it's met an impasse. According to the folks behind the hardware, the device wasn't approved under Apple's MFi (Made for iPad / iPhone / iPod) program since Cook and Co. don't bestow the seal of approval upon products that leverage the 30-pin female connector in conjunction with Bluetooth. Pear's creators note they could move ahead without Apple's blessing, but say that the development "officially kills this product" since Cupertino could put the kibosh on the operation. Despite dashed hopes for the dongle's reincarnation, its creators are pushing forward with another product -- though it's unclear if it's an iteration of the ill-fated connector -- and expect to have more details within three to four weeks.

Simple passive 2-way for car doors?

  1. Default Simple passive 2-way for car doors?

(trying to avoid car audio troll fests if possible)

I'm going to be gutting the stereo in my new car, and was considering my options for the front door speakers (lots more I'm pondering, but we'll just keep it to this for now. I could spend $500+ on some really good passive 5.25" 2-way components... or I could design my own I suppose with your help

No matter what I do all will go behind the stock grills... so I don't need grills (they're all so damn ugly anyways, aren't they?)

Total impedance of tweet/woof/crossover to be 4 ohm nominal.

Tweeters will be in the sail panels as you would expect. Obviously they can't be some flanged design. Small.

5.25" woofers, much to my joy, are located quite high up in the doors, a good 6" higher than your typical down-by-your-feet car door woofers... so the spacing between the woofer and tweeter isn't too bad... on the downside this means a good sized 6"+ won't fit.

No clue what the volume of the door is, and of course it ain't sealed... so would this be an IB design of sorts? (he asks a bit naively)

Want to go aluminum or poly woofer to avoid any issues with moisture... poly best in this regard?

Woofers will have to be low profile of some kind.

    So... any suggestions?

    Thanks

The 5" Dayton RS looks like like it might work well, I think it's shallow enough... so there's a good starting point, I don't think it can be much if any deeper.

I will probably have to take a door apart simply to get a better sense of how much room I really have... but let's start there for now.

    I hate blue speakers.

I need components. Tweets in the sails and mids in the doors. So those don't make sense.

I know you said PE, but Zaph has a two way with his woofer and a small flange Seas tweeter.

Are you going to measure these speakers in car? If not, will it really be any different than using a generic crossover? Then, will it really be any better than some mid-range retail component options?

That is a real question btw, not just rhetorical.

Maybe not. But it'll cost a lot less. I'll bet for under $200 in components (and rolling my own crossovers) I can have some REALLY nice speakers in my car... better than if I spent 2-3 times as much on pre-made car stereo component speakers.

I really don't trust a phase plug driver in an automotive environment, although I have no empirical data to back that up. DA135's in that spot might be nice, though....and maybe the Vifa OX20 to go along with it? Maybe you could whip up a little horn loaded WG for the OX20 in the sail panel....

  10. Default Re: Simple passive 2-way for car doors?

Have you considered alternative mounting locations? I don't know what kind of car you have, but is there any space available in the kick-panel area? Any place they can be mounted that will help equalize the path lengths from each side to your ears?

If you're serious about getting good sound, it's really difficult when you're close to one speaker but far off-axis, and on-axis with the other speaker that's much further away. Some people try to fix that with delay and independent channel EQ, but that makes it even worse for the passenger.

It really doesn't matter how good the drivers are if they're not in a good location for stereo imaging at the listening positiion. I'd rather listen to that cheap Aura coax pair in optimized kick-panels (usually implies angled upward & inward, towards the dome light) than a $500 component set placed high in the doors...but hey, maybe that's just me.

What's Past is Prologue: a look inside the future of Lockheed Martin

DNP What's Past is Prologue A Look Inside the Future of Lockheed Martin

I receive a terse invite from Lockheed Martin that asks me to take a "glimpse into the future," but it doesn't mention whose future it is. I could write about what I know of the American defense contractor on the back of a postage stamp, but a cursory Google search fills in some of the blanks. The company reportedly receives around 7 percent of the US military budget on its own - and with that, my imagination runs rampant about what I'm likely to see. Dreaming of playing with laser pistols, intelligent cyborgs and giant robots, I tell them I'm coming.

A few days later, I turn up at the Honourable Artillery Company in London's glitzy financial district, a miniature castle that's dwarfed by the gleaming skyscrapers that surround it. In a way, the landscape is telling, since the occupants of those buildings can shoulder some of the blame for the current financial crisis - while across the street, Lockheed Martin is preparing its cost-cutting response.

Two hulking vehicles guard the entrance off a small courtyard, and through a window I see a plush room full of red velvet and leather, stuffed with computers and pensive, well-dressed operators. I wonder if I'm being vetted as I amble inside, my now-sodden socks and matted hair marking me out as unthreatening -- just as long as I promise not to get out my camera. As I'm ushered inside and the tour begins, I'm expecting to see jetpacks and robots, but the reality is much different. Not even this industry is immune to the world's financial problems, and my tour would reveal that its future lies decidedly in our past.

Rice meeting with senators fails to dampen criticism

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice on Tuesday failed to win over her harshest Republican critics in the U.S. Senate who are threatening to block her nomination if President Barack Obama chooses her for Secretary of State or another top post in his second-term Cabinet.

Rice met for about an hour behind closed doors at the U.S. Capitol with Senators John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte. They have openly criticized her for initial comments after the September 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi that suggested it was a spontaneous event arising from protests of an anti-Islam film rather than a preplanned terrorist strike.

The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in the attack on the Benghazi mission and a nearby CIA annex. Intelligence officials later said the attack was possibly tied to al Qaeda affiliates.

"We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got, and some that we didn't get, concerning evidence that was overwhelming leading up to the attack on our consulate," McCain told reporters after the meeting.

"It is clear that the information that she gave the American people was incorrect when she said that it was a spontaneous demonstration triggered by a hateful video," he said.

"It was not, and there was compelling evidence at the time that that was certainly not the case, including statements by Libyans as well as other Americans who are fully aware that people don't bring mortars and rocket-propelled grenades to spontaneous demonstrations," McCain said.

Rice was accompanied by a CIA official and was not seen by reporters.

President Barack Obama has defended Rice and said if senators had a problem with her comments on a round of Sunday television talk shows days after the attack, they should go to him.

    MomTV

Kate White and Judi Diamond in 'MFF: Mom Friends Forever.'

Kate White and Judi Diamond in NickMom's MFF: Mom Friends Forever.

Poor NickMom. Like a real-life mom, Nick Jr.?s new nightly comedy programming block geared toward matriarchs is getting complaints from all sides. Mothers in Western states who used to plunk their toddlers down in front of the tube after dinner were shocked, shocked! to find that Dora the Explorer reruns had been replaced by foul-mouthed comediennes joking about their saggy boobs. (NickMom starts at 10 p.m. ET, but for families west of the Appalachians, it can begin as early as 7.) These furious mamas have started a protest movement with a professional-looking website and a simple list of demands: Either cancel the programming or move it to an entirely new network. And East Coast elitist television writers are whining about NickMom?s ?I.Q. lowering gravitational pull.?

Or at least one writer is. Though the shows have not been very widely reviewed (or watched, according to Nielsen ratings), the New York Times devoted a feature to NickMom in early November, in which critic Neil Genzlinger claimed that the shows? combination of penis jokes and potty-training anecdotes appealed to ?the baser regions of the female neocortex? the same way sports and jiggle TV appeal to men.

I?m about to have a child, and even though the descriptions of NickMom?including ?a faux commercial for the boy band Sons II Moms ? scored with the hysterical would-be hit ?The Dishes (Let Me Wash Them)? ??make it sound like distinctly not my thing, both the hysterical sancti-mommies? protest movement (one commenter says the executive in charge of NickMom is ?no better then a pedophile in my book?) and the condescending sneer of the Times review (caring about parenting is as gendered and inconsequential as ogling cleavage?) annoyed me.

And so I wanted to watch NickMom to see for myself what the programming block had to say about modern mommyhood. I wanted to stand up for it. Also, given that I am about to be housebound most evenings and likely not permitted by my blessed infant to sleep, I wanted to see if it was any good. I?m going to be watching a lot of TV.

There?s a unified group of activists irked by NickMom?s raunch, so I figured I could at least enjoy it for that. But unfortunately NickMom relies on the same parenting platitudes that are as outmoded and cringeworthy as the modified Kate Gosselin haircut that so many women on the channel sport. According to the shows on NickMom, mothers are sexless, frumpy nags who are doing the ?hardest job on earth.? (Yes, that old chestnut was uttered more than once.)

One of the pillars of the programming block so far is NickMom Night Out, a stand-up comedy show. In the episode I watched, host Caroline Rhea did a bit about her daughter having a meltdown on an airplane. She cried. She wanted chocolate. Etc. Unless your child maimed a flight attendant, there really is nothing new or funny to say on this topic. Worse was comic Michelle Miller Harrington, who said she liked being pregnant because she could eat for two and not get dirty looks. HA! She also talked about her first Pilates class, during which she did only one position, ?face on floor crying.? Rimshot.

Then there?s MFF: Mom Friends Forever, about two St. Louis moms named Judi and Kate who started a Web show together, which morphed into this semiscripted reality show. The filming of their vlog frames MFF, and sets the theme for each episode. The one I watched was called ?Control Freak.? The opener has Judi asking Kate, ?Are you a control freak?? to which Kate replies, ?Yes!? Judi then asks Kate, ?Are you a control freak about cleaning?? I won?t give the answer to that one away.

At one point in the episode, Kate and her husband take their son on a college tour, and later express sticker shock at the price of a year?s tuition. This would be mildly relatable, and maybe even entertaining, if the exchange between Kate and her spouse felt even remotely authentic. Instead they mumble clich?s like, ?I don't understand how the average person sends their child to college,? and say that their kid only wants to go to a four-year college ?to get away from us,? while barely making eye contact.

The best show in the current lineup is Parental Discretion With Stefanie Wilder-Taylor. It?s part stand-up monologue from Wilder-Taylor, who used to blog about that funny intersection of drinking and parenting until she decided to give up the drinking, part sketch comedy, and part Candid Camera-style secretly filmed trickery. Though many of Wilder-Taylor?s bits are hackneyed (?Like all working moms, I carry around a lot of guilt. ... I also carry around a lot of water weight.?), she at least has some spark and comic timing.

Even more satisfying was the hidden camera bit. The actress in it posed as a bitchy, demanding pregnant woman interviewing prospective nannies at her office. She asks these sweet-faced women increasingly absurd questions like, ?I'm having professionals make a mask of my face. Would you be willing to wear it around the baby?? She tells one woman that she?s a ?tiger mom? and makes the potential nanny say, ?You?re fat. What?s wrong with your face?? as if she were giving a baby tough, disapproving love.

That one half-hour of goodness nestled in hours of mediocrity made me realize what?s the matter with NickMom?s other shows. What worked about the nanny hidden camera was that, while of course embracing mommy culture simply by being a part of the NickMom block, it was also pointed criticism of the absurdity of it all, rather than bland, soppy reassurance that whatever you?re doing is just great because you?re part of that exalted category of human known as MOM. It?s the hardest job on earth, didn?t you know?

The biggest problem with NickMom, though, is that it?s purporting to fill a need that doesn?t exist. Moms already have an outlet to hear other moms be funny and edgy and real. It?s called the Internet, and last time I checked the stats, there are almost 4 million moms who blog out there in the great U.S. of A, whose insights, both raunchy and sappy, are available 24/7 without commercial interruption. These wildly different sites are arguably saying something much more true about motherhood than a single channel with a fairly unified vision ever could: that moms are not a monolith.

Modeling the breaking points of metallic glasses

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Metallic glass alloys (or liquid metals) are three times stronger than the best industrial steel, but can be molded into complex shapes with the same ease as plastic. These materials are highly resistant to scratching, denting, shattering and corrosion. So far, they have been used in a variety of products from golf clubs to aircraft components. And, some smartphone manufacturers are even looking to cast their next-generation phone cases out of it.

But despite their potential, the mechanical properties of these substances are still a scientific mystery. One lingering question is why they have such wildly different toughness and breaking points, depending on how they are made. Although this may not be a huge concern for small applications like smartphone cases it will be extremely important if these materials are ever used in structural applications where they would need to support large loads.

Recently, Christopher Rycroft of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's (Berkeley Lab's) Computational Research Division has developed some novel computational techniques to address this question. When Rycroft combined these techniques with a mechanical model of metallic glass developed by Eran Bouchbinder and his colleagues at Israel's Weizmann Institute, the two were able to propose a novel explanation of the physical process behind the large variations in breaking points of metallic glasses. Their results are also in qualitative agreement with laboratory experiments.

"We hope that this work will contribute to the understanding of metallic glasses, and aid in their use in practical applications. Ultimately, we would like to develop a tool capable of making quantitative predictions about the toughness of metallic glasses depending on their preparation method," says Rycroft.

Rycroft and Bouchbinder are co-authors on a paper recently published in Physical Review Letters.

What is a Metallic Glass? And, Why is it So Difficult to Model?

Scientists define "glass" as a material that cools from a liquid state to a solid state without crystallizing -- which is when atoms settle into a lattice, or a highly regular spatial pattern. Because many metal lattices are riddled with defects, these materials "deform," or permanently bend out of shape, relatively easily. When crystallization does not occur, the atoms settle into a random arrangement. This atomic structure allows metallic glasses to spring back into shape instead of deforming permanently. And without the defects, some metallic glasses also have extremely efficient magnetic properties.

Rycroft notes that one of the biggest mysteries in condensed matter physics is how glass transitions from a liquid state to a solid state. To successfully create metallic glass, the metal has to cool relatively quickly before atomic lattices form.

"Depending on how you prepare or manipulate these metallic glasses, the breaking points can differ by a factor of 10," says Rycroft. "Because scientists don't completely understand how glass transitions from liquid to solid state, they have not been able to fully explain why the breaking points of these materials vary so widely."

According to Bouchbinder, computer models also have a hard time predicting the breaking points of metallic glass because the timescale of events varies dramatically -- from microseconds to seconds. For instance, researchers can bend or pull the material for several seconds before it breaks, which occurs almost instantaneously. And the material's internal plastic deformation -- the process where it irreversibly deforms -- occurs on an intermediate timescale.

"We've actually been able to develop some numerical methods to capture these differences in timescales," says Rycroft, of the techniques used in the recent paper.

When Rycroft incorporated these methods into Bouchbinder's mechanical model and calibrated it based on available data, the duo managed to simulate and better understand the breaking points of metallic glass alloys based on their preparation process. He notes that this model is rather unique as it combines novel and flexible numerical methods with recent insights about the physics of glasses. The simulations have also been able to predict the large decreases in toughness that are seen in laboratory experiments.

"If you can vary the way metallic glass is prepared in computer models and capture the differences in how it breaks, you can pose a reasonable explanation for why this occurs. This might also give you a better idea about how the glass transitions from a liquid to a solid, as well as the mechanical properties of a glass," says Rycroft. "We've essentially created something that might evolve into a tool for predicting the toughness of metallic glasses."

"For quite some time I've wanted to calculate the fracture toughness of metallic glasses, but knew that this was a very tough mathematical and computational challenge, certainly well above my abilities, and probably above the capabilities of conventional computational solid mechanics," says Bouchbinder. "I think that Rycroft's methods have opened the way to new possibilities and I am enthusiastic to see where this can lead us."

    How Does Mobile Marketing Work?

A 2011 study by Flurry, a mobile analytics company, compared U.S. ad spending on different media outlets to the time consumers spent using those outlets. While the spend for television, radio and web are fairly proportional, print only gets 6% of people?s time while marketing companies spend 29% on it. Hardly seems worth it. However, it also reinforces what many marketers have been saying. Advertisers are not taking advantage of ad space on mobile media. Receiving only 1% of ad spend, users spend 23% of their time on mobile devices versus other media.

    how does mobile marketing work

The chart above shows disproportion business spending for all of the traditional media, indicating too many dollars chasing too few consumers. The web still shows plenty of room to grow; however the disproportionate, even sever under spend in mobile, indicates that it is still early in the game and most importantly, it is a great opportunity for those business and industries that are uniquely well suited to be seen by the burgeoning mobile user population.

Small and medium sized businesses, large businesses, even corporations?everyone needs to be advertising on mobile and building mobile-friendly websites. There is no more perfect time to get into the market. It is still a fresh, virtually untapped source for generating leads, selling products and increasing your audience?s overall experience with your brand.

    Build a Mobile Friendly Website

Building a mobile-friendly website doesn?t cost nearly as much as you might think. A basic mobile site should cost anywhere from $500 ? $2,000, making it an important and affordable avenue for your marketing efforts. If you would prefer to do it yourself, you could create a mobile template and work on that from scratch. Either way, it is important to know what your main focus is going to be. Remember that mobile devices tend to be small and, in consequence, not a whole lot of information will fit on the screen.

If you have an eCommerce site, you want to make it easy for people to browse through your products, add them to their cart and purchase them. For small, local businesses, you should focus on having a click to call option and easy access to a map with directions to your location. If your purpose is lead generation, have a mobile-compatible form that is quick and simple to fill out.

    Marketing

Even though mobile may be a new platform, it is still imperative that you have a definite marketing strategy for advertising. We suggest using AdWords and taking advantage of their extensions like the click-to-call feature previously mentioned, as well as phone call extension. This is especially important if you are a retail or mom-and-pop operation.

If you are a locally-based business you must be on Google Local. This is because Google Local listings are the first to appear in the results when someone searches for a business.

For example, if I needed a plumber and looked one up on my mobile device, this is what I would see:

Rather than offering me Roto-Rooter or some nationally known company, I am offered the locally owned and operated plumbers in my area. Also, remember that click to call button we mentioned, as well as the directions? Well, there?s the example of why they are so important. The Coral Way Plumbing Corporation may very well get my business, just because it is easy to access them on my mobile device. That is not business you want to lose out on.

    Display and Banner Advertising

If you have a mobile device, then you already know how much time people spend playing games and utilizing different productivity tools. If you?re not yet a mobile device owner, the answer is, in my humble opinion, too much. But either way, people do spend a whole lot of time on their mobile devices. What does matter for marketers especially is that all of these apps have ads that you can use to target specific people.

Taking the biggest advantage of mobile app ads depends on your business and what your business goals are. However, generating leads and targeting a specific, niche audience through the mobile platform is convenient and simple.

For example, if you are a local retailer of soccer equipment, you can target a specific city and advertise to people playing a soccer-related game on their mobile device.

Mobile advertising gives you access to an audience that couldn?t previously be reached. Mobile ads are inexpensive, and tracking conversions is easy. If planned and executed accurately, mobile advertising is a veritable goldmine. This is especially true since it is an avenue that, at the moment, is unlikely to be fully utilized by your competitors. You can be on the cutting edge!

    Take Some Pointers from Beneful

For those of you who may not have pets, Beneful is a pet food company that has recently entered the mobile realm. Their mobile site is a perfect example of what a successfully integrated mobile marketing strategy entails.

Take a look at this screen shot:

Geared toward pet owners, Beneful isn?t just selling dog food or offering locations where their product is sold. Instead, they have made an effort to provide value to their audience.

They offer a map where people with pets can find local parks to take them to play and meet other dogs and dog owners. Not only that, but you can also find places to stay that are pet-friendly when you are travelling. What pet owner wouldn?t love that? It takes something that, in the past, has been time consuming and even frustrating and lays it at their audience?s fingertips. Way to go, Beneful!

Not only that, but they are also running a contest for a dream dog park where you can read about last year?s winner, vote for your favorite entry or meet the team that chooses the grand prize winner, and a multitude of other information about the contest.

They also provide information about their products so that if a pet owner is unsure of what to buy for their pet, they can easily look up their different options and make an informed decision without having to lift 50 pound bags of dog food to read the back or return home to do their research ? it is all right there for them.

The Beneful website is just one example of what a mobile website should look like in the future. Its focus is on providing real value to its audience and making their lives easier. This helps them become a part of their audience?s daily lives, which is the ultimate goal of all marketing ? to have a brand so strong that people couldn?t live without it.

PFT: Cutler's chances of playing 'looking better'

Atlanta Falcons v Philadelphia EaglesGetty Images

When Nnamdi Asomugha was a younger man, he?d get upset at players he saw on television, the ones he thought were underperforming.

So he?s not going to badmouth Eagles fans who have targeted him the same way.

?If a fan has an issue with that, they?re not going to get me saying that?s wrong or anything like that,? Asomugha said, via Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com. ?I can look back to being a fan and teams I liked and when a player I like comes in and, . . . it?s not working out, being upset about that.

?So I can?t now be that guy and then look at them and say, ?You can?t be upset that we haven?t won and I haven?t been, you know, Superman on the field,? even though that?s been expected of me.?

The cornerback has become the very symbol of the Eagles current woes, signing a five-year, $60 million contract to become part of the Dream Team, and struggling just like the rest of them once he got there. He?s been part of a team that?s gone 11-15 since he walked in the door, far below expectations.

That?s hard anywhere, but in Philadelphia, the heat is a little higher than in other places.

?It?s tough,? he said. ?That?s one of the things they say, . . . Mentally, how do you handle this sort of situation? Not just the losing, but losing in this environment. Because losing is different here.

?No one wants to lose. You want to win everything that you?re doing, but as they?ve pointed out, as we all know, you?ve got to win here. You just have to win here.

?So I get that question a lot from younger guys, and I just try to talk to them, keep their head in it. When you believe in yourself and believe in your team no matter what?s going on, I?m one of the people that believes it turns around at some point.?

Of course, when it does turn around, it?s likely to include a new coach, and it?s far from guaranteed it will include a 33-year-old corner who?s scheduled to make $15 million next year. But he doesn?t second-guess his decision to sign with the Eagles.

?Did I make the right decision? Should I have gone somewhere else? That doesn?t cross my mind at all,? he said. ?This is the place I wanted to be. Whatever happens or has happened, I always have the mindset that there?s something to learn from it and there?s a way to grow.

?And I think especially with what we?ve been through, the type of stuff we?ve been through the last year and a half, what did you learn from it? How can you become a better man from it? That?s going to help you on the field. That?s always been my mentality. I absolutely believe in the decision that I made and believe in this team.

?I don?t even think about that stuff. Whatever happens, I?m built to deal with that situation. Honestly? Being as honest as I can be? It doesn?t go through my mind.?

It?s going through many others, however, and they?re rightly wondering if it was all worth it.

No. 3 Georgia blows out hapless Ga. Tech 42-10

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) ? The Georgia Bulldogs collected a trophy at midfield for another win over their state rival, then got some encouragement from the governor in their quest for a bigger reward.

    No. 1.

Aaron Murray threw two touchdown passes, Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall each ran for a pair of TDs, and third-ranked Georgia stayed right in the thick of the national championship race with a 42-10 rout of Georgia Tech on Saturday.

Gov. Nathan Deal presented the "Governor's Cup" to the Bulldogs (11-1) after they beat the Yellow Jackets for the 11th time in 12 years. He congratulated both teams on a "great game" (a bit of a stretch, to say the least) before turning toward the jubilant Georgia players.

"Keep up the good work," Deal said. "We're looking for a national championship."

    Georgia is two wins away.

The Bulldogs will face No. 2 Alabama for the Southeastern Conference championship in Atlanta next Saturday. The winner of that contest will likely advance to play in the BCS title game on Jan. 7.

"All that matters is this game," Georgia linebacker Christian Robinson said, looking ahead to facing the defending national champion Crimson Tide. "This is everything. This is what you play for."

Georgia Tech (6-6) didn't put up much of a fight. This one was a laugher right from the start as the home team scored just over a minute into the game, built a 28-3 halftime lead and was up 42-3 before the Yellow Jackets scored a meaningless TD in the fourth quarter.

"It was a pretty good thumping," Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said. "We could not slow them down at all, which has been a recurring theme the last few times we've played them, and we couldn't finish drives offensively."

Murray completed 14 of 17 for 215 yards, becoming the first quarterback in SEC history to pass from more than 3,000 yards in three straight seasons.

Gurley finished with 97 yards on 12 carries and now has 14 touchdowns on the season, one shy of Herschel Walker's school freshman record set in 1980. Marshall, also a freshman, piled up 66 yards on just seven carries.

The Bulldogs certainly didn't look like a team that was looking ahead to Alabama.

"You don't do that when you're playing Georgia Tech," coach Mark Richt said. "This game means a lot for us. Our coaches prepared hard, they were diligent, and the players took to the coaching. I thought we played a superb game. I'm so proud of everybody. I could not have asked for a better today."

Bacarri Rambo and Alec Ogletree came up big for the Georgia defense. Rambo stripped the ball away at the Georgia 1 to stop the Yellow Jackets' first possession, as well as grabbing his 16th career interception to tie Jake Scott's school record. Ogletree had 15 tackles, several of which were downright brutal and the highest total by a Georgia defender this season.

For good measure, the Bulldogs ran their season total to 456 points, breaking the school scoring mark set by the 2002 SEC championship team.

"We put our foot on the pedal from the start didn't let up the entire game," said receiver Rhett McGowan, who hauled in one of Murray's touchdown passes.

Georgia Tech, amazingly enough, still has a chance to win the Atlantic Coast Conference title next weekend and earn a BCS bowl bid. The Yellow Jackets clinched a spot in the championship game against No. 10 Florida State after Miami pulled out from postseason consideration, hoping to lessen the blow from a pending NCAA investigation.

The Yellow Jackets won't have any chance of beating the Seminoles if they don't turn in a much better effort than this.

"Well, I look at it like another opportunity," Johnson said. "We'll see how they respond. You don't get those opportunities very often, so you need to take advantage of them."

Malcolm Mitchell returned the opening kickoff 47 yards to the Georgia Tech 44, and the rout was on. Murray completed an 11-yard pass to Gurley, Gurley broke off a 15-yard run, Murray hooked up with Arthur Lynch on a 15-yard pass, and Gurley ran 3 yards for the score. Four snaps, and it was 7-0. The game was 63 seconds old.

Georgia Tech appeared to be moving for a tying touchdown on its first possession. With nine straight runs, the Yellow Jackets ripped off five first downs and had the ball at the Georgia 20. Robert Godhigh tried to take it in from there, breaking tackles and staying on his feet all the way to the 1. But Rambo snatched the ball away before Godhigh got to the end zone, returning it 49 yards to midfield.

This time, the Bulldogs needed less than 3 minutes to put another touchdown on the board.

Gurley had runs of 15 and 10 yards, Murray passed to Mitchell for a 16-yard gain, and Gurley made it 14-0 with a 1-yard plunge.

Before the half was done, Georgia tacked on two more scores: Marshall's 15-yard run and Murray's 11-yard pass to McGowan. The Yellow Jackets ran for 220 yards in the first two quarters, but all they had to show for it was Chris Tanner's 38-yard field goal.

Georgia Tech's misery was epitomized by its final possession of the half. After another extended drive ? 13 plays covering 56 yards ? the Yellow Jackets had to settle for a field goal try on the last play. Tanner's 36-yarder was wide right by a good 10 yards, the almost entirely red-clad crowd letting out a sarcastic cheer.

Georgia piled it on in the third quarter. Jay Rome hauled in a 24-yard touchdown from Murray and Marshall scored for the second time, sprinting around right end for a 17-yard TD.

The Yellow Jackets had another miserable defensive effort, giving up more than 40 points for the sixth time this season.

"We've got to stick together because some guys were fading apart during the last bit of the game," linebacker Quayshawn Neely said. "We've got to stick together and hold tight because we've got something big coming up next week."

5 Reasons You Should Write a Book

If you?re looking to establish yourself as an expert in your field, there are few strategies that work better than writing a book. They?re a big deal to most people, and we all read them to find out about topics we?re interested in.

But don?t expect that you?ll make it to the top of the New York Times Bestseller list simply because you?ve written a book. Most authors, especially in the fiercely competitive business book field, won?t make a living writing books. But that doesn?t mean you shouldn?t consider writing one.

    write a book

As a matter of fact, here are 5 reasons why you should write one:

    1. People Take You More Seriously

There?s something about having a book or two on your resume that makes people sit up and pay attention. Which is surprising to me, because it?s actually pretty easy to write one (granted, I write for a living, so it might be a tad easier for me).

If you?re a small business owner, having written that book might be the one thing that sways a potential customer to buy from you.

    2. You Get to Share Your Knowledge

As a business owner, you know a ton about your industry. You?re likely sharing your expertise on Twitter, Facebook and your blog, so writing a book should be a natural extension of that. Getting it all out of your head and onto paper can help you help others.

    3. You?ll Get More Customers

Again,?writing books makes people trust you and your brand. If you?re looking for a way to get introduced to more potential customers, a book is a great way to do it. Just make sure you?ve got a solid marketing plan in place so that people know about it.

    4. You?ll Get More Speaking Opportunities

Conferences and trade shows love inviting authors to speak or participate in panels. Your book is your ticket to speaking gigs. You can pitch conference organizers on a topic that relates to your book, or participate in a discussion on a subject you know well.

    5. It?s the Ultimate in Content Marketing

You know that blogging and social media are part of a content marketing strategy, but everyone can do that. Not everyone makes the effort to write a book. By being one of the select few, you can go further than you can with the lower levels of content marketing and also use social media to promote your book?and your expertise.

The bonus? You?ll have plenty of fodder for your blog and social channels.

You don?t even have to write the book yourself if you?re not a prolific writer. That?s where ghost writers come in. You get the credit and you get a book that is well-written.

The conversation continues, feel free to join us in the conversation about why you should write a book.

World's Tallest Building will be Modular | Daily Business News

As follow up to an article we posted June 19, 2012 about Broad Sustainable Building Corp. constructing the world?s largest skyscraper in 90 days from modular units, the project is about to get underway. TIME says the 2,749-foot, 220-story tower in China?s Hunan Province will contain apartments for 30,000, a school, a hospital and 17 helipads and will be built at the rate of five stories a day. Made to withstand a 9.0 magnitude earthquake due to the use of less concrete and steel, and more wood, the wide open space of a lobby on the ground floor is not conducive to modular construction, according to Broad?s building history. As MHProNews has learned, one of Broad?s far-reaching plans is to license the technology of its quick-build modular units to other countries.

How 'Smashing' & 'Spearing' Shrimp Speedily Attack Prey

Spearing mantis shrimp hide in their burrows and wait for an unsuspecting creature to come along. Then, in the blink of an eye, they spear it with their long claws, like an underwater archer. How do they spear their prey so quickly?

Maya deVries, a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, compared the attack of the spearing shrimp with its relative, the "smasher" shrimp. Both animals are able to unleash quick attacks with a strange spring and latch system that stores up energy in their muscles and releases it in an instant. It's like a bow and arrow, she said.

Unexpectedly, she found that smasher mantis shrimp can move much more quickly than the spearing variety, which is the opposite of what was expected. The smashers, she found, need quick speeds to produce enough force to crack the shells of their prey, such as crabs and other shellfish. The spearing shrimp, on the other hand, only needs to move slightly faster than their prey, she said.

Spearing shrimp can move their claws up to 8 feet (2.5 meters) per second, while their smashing brethren can reach speeds of 23 feet (7 m) per second, deVries said. The results were published in the Journal of Experimental Biology today (Nov. 22).

Peacock mantis shrimp, a relative of the smasher shrimp examined in the study, are even more impressive, moving their claws at speeds of 75 feet (23 m) per second and delivering blows with 200 pounds (91 kilograms) of force behind them despite being only 4 inches (10 centimeters) long.

Barnstaple in North Devon hosts Classic Car show | eRentalNews ...

Vintage cars have the power to inspire great affection in their owners and devotees enjoy nothing better than getting together with other aficionados and showing off their vehicles en masse. One such gathering is set to happen this Sunday when the?North Devon Sports & Classic Car Club?holds its annual show at the Pannier Market in Barnstaple (see map).

Founded in 1985, the North Devon club now boasts a membership of around 140. It holds monthly meetings throughout the year and prides itself on being ?very active and friendly?, with the annual show being the culmination of the club?s regular events ? the one day in the calendar where the most distinguished classic cars in the club?s fleet are all likely to make an appearance. It is a rare occasion when such a wealth of automotive history is on display in one location.?

Members of the public are welcome to attend the day and anyone with an interest in vintage or even ultra-modern sports cars is in for quite a treat. The North Devon club?s stable includes everything from a couple of classic 1920s Rolls Royce to?the very latest Jaguar XF, rated a ?superb saloon? by Top Gear. For those who prefer American classics, keep an eye out for the Ford Mustang. And if historical oddities are more your bag, be sure to catch the 1960s-era?Portafold, a folding caravan constructed from fiber-glass.?

Petrolheads who prefer their machines on two wheels will also have plenty to hold their interest: this year?s show is held in conjunction with the?North Devon Classic Motorcycle Club. And keeping the atmosphere decidedly vintage, live music will be performed throughout the day by a George Formby appreciation group.
