I prefer Ptah's approach.
Also Plato wasn't really a big fan of democracy. That's kind of the point in the Republic--humanity needs to be ruled by its higher nature, and can't be trusted to govern itself based on its own desires.
(And this critique is more the point than a proposal for an actual system, IMO. Also it's a metaphor for the individual soul and all that.)

"Simple logic" can't produce a just arrangement for governing human societies. Reason can enable individuals to live relatively ungoverned lives, though imperfectly.
The "philosopher-kings" idea has been a dead duck for millennia.
