Spongebob Squarepants Will Return to Theaters
Paramount Pictures recently severed its ties with DreamWorks Animation as the partnership comes to an end at the close of this year. The studio had previously distributed DreamWorks Animation?s films, but now its sights are set on its own animation output. Viacom president and CEO Philippe Dauman announced today (via THR) that a new SpongeBob SquarePants movie will kick off Paramount?s new animation effort with a release targeted for the end of 2014. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie was released in 2004 to a mediocre response (it grossed $85.4 million domestically and $54.7 million worldwide), but Dauman said today that Nickelodeon ?did not have as much of a presence around the world? back then, assuring investors that the outlook for their new SpongeBob movie has bright prospects. The studio?s first fully owned CGI effort was last year?s terrific Rango, so I?m hoping we?ll see more along those lines in the future. Each new animated film will cost the company less than $100 million due to advances in technology, so Dauman sees this new venture into animation as a smart business opportunity. Pixar and DreamWorks basically dominate the animation world, but I?d be more than happy to see some quality output from another studio.
No details regarding the plot of the new SpongeBob movie were given, but I?m assuming it will chronicle the misadventures of one goofy talking sponge and his dimwitted starfish pal. Watch the trailer for the first movie below:

Today it suddenly accused its former ally of infringing on 10-20 of its patents. It demands a settlement from Facebook or it says it will sue. The betrayer only warned Facebook privately once the New York Times had publicly published details passed to it by Yahoo. Oscar night isn't only a huge event for the world of movies; it's also a big night for fashion. Over the years, it has become known as the hottest runway show of the year, with the top designers clamoring to get their dresses on the night's nominees, hoping to win a spot on the coveted best-dressed list.
On Sunday night, all eyes were on the actresses working the red carpet, and they did not disappoint. There were pops of color on the carpet, but the big trend of the night seemed to be ladies in white. Gwyneth Paltrow looked glamorous in a white one-shoulder Tom Ford gown with a matching wrap.
MTV Style picks their best-dressed at the Oscars.
"From what I saw walking down the carpet, Gwyneth Paltrow looked amazing in Tom Ford," Janell Snowden of VH1 told MTV News. "She was in the color of the night, which was white."
Rooney Mara, a Best Actress nominee for "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," traded in her typical black garb for elegant white, wearing a lace Givenchy gown with a plunging back.
"I did think a lot about what I was going to wear; it's a long process," Mara told MTV News. "I like to wear white also. I wanted to mix it up. This just happened to be the most beautiful dress, that's why I wore it."
MTV Style expert Mary H.K. Choi agreed that Mara wowed in her Oscar ensemble. "White was a huge trend on the red carpet tonight, and this stark, architectural Givenchy looked absolutely surreal against the phosphorescence of her alabaster skin," Choi said. "She looked just pristine, and the fact that her impossibly shiny, jet-black hair was in a tight bun with blunt bangs really anchored the look. She dresses with a certain severity, given her young age, but I'm a huge fan."
Of course, it wasn't just the ladies in white who stole the show. "The Help" star Emma Stone turned heads in a stunning red Giambattista Valli gown.
"I just loved this dress. There were titterings on Twitter about how people either loved or hated the bow, but I thought a dramatic, festive accent at the neckline looked stunning and complemented the side sweep of her red hair," Choi said. "A risk, definitely, but I think it absolutely paid off."
Stone's co-star Jessica Chastain also made a lasting impression on her first Oscar red carpet. Chastain, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, shined on the carpet in a black and gold Alexander McQueen gown.
"This is a big moment — probably it's the biggest moment of my life — so I needed a dress that was a big-moment dress," Chastain told MTV News. "It's McQueen, and the embroidery and the way it fits — to me, this dress is how I'm feeling right now."

House Dems: Gains start with California

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Democrats' path to power starts in California where the state's friendly redrawn congressional districts and a number of Republican retirements offer Democrats their best opportunity for victories in November.
Republicans acknowledge that Democrats will gain seats in a highly intense election year, especially with President Barack Obama and the economy on the upswing. But capturing 25 seats nationwide and retaking control of the House of Representatives after two years in the minority? That's nothing but California dreamin', Republicans say.
The small government tea party movement and voter frustration with Obama's policies helped Republicans deliver a sound drubbing to Democrats in 2010. The Republicans won a net of 63 House seats, seized the majority and elected Rep. John Boehner of Ohio as speaker. The Republicans currently hold 242 seats to 192 for the Democrats with one vacancy - former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' Arizona seat, which will be filled in a special election June 12.
Despite those numbers, Democrats envision gains in California, with the potential for four to eight seats. Illinois, Florida and Texas are fertile territory to increase their numbers. Even though Texas' new election map remains in limbo, Democrats saw potential gains in the Republican-drawn version and figure court-approved boundaries will only get better as they take into account the state's growing Hispanic population.
Obama's steady rise in favorability and the improving economy have contributed to Democratic optimism. So has the divisive Republican fight over extending the payroll tax cut last December that tarnished Congress' image before rank-and-file Republican lawmakers caved.
An NBC-Wall Street Journal poll in January found that 47 percent of adults favored Democrats controlling Congress, compared with 41 percent who preferred Republicans. That was the Democrats' biggest edge on that question this election cycle.
"We've gone from a gale force wind against us a year ago to a sustained breeze at our backs going into November," New York Rep. Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said in an interview. "We've outraised the Republicans, we've outrecruited them in candidates and the House is very much in play."
One fresh sign that Democrats have seen an improvement in their chances is that the committee is recruiting campaign managers for more contests, according to Democrats tracking House races.
But Israel stopped short of making any predictions eight months out.
"I haven't promised anybody 25 or more," he said. "I am promising that it's going to be razor-close."
The difficulty for Democrats is that while they may gain in California or Illinois, other seats around the country may be completely lost, putting them in a considerable hole.
Moderate and conservative Democratic lawmakers, such as Oklahoma's Dan Boren and Arkansas' Mike Ross, who survived the onslaught in 2010 decided to bow out in their Republican-leaning districts. Twenty-one Democrats and 15 Republicans have announced their retirement or plan to seek another office. In North Carolina, where the Republican-led Legislature drew a new congressional map that shored up Republican incumbents and made it extremely tough for Democrats, Heath Shuler and Brad Miller decided against another run.
Not done with North Carolina, Republicans also are targeting Democratic Reps. Larry Kissell and Mike McIntyre, who suddenly have more Republican voters in their districts.
"We can take nothing for granted in the face of a relentless Democrat effort that is prepared to spend hundreds of millions of special interest dollars to hand the speaker's gavel back to Nancy Pelosi," said Texas Rep. Pete Sessions, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Consider Georgia's new 9th Congressional District, an open seat created by the census-based map. The district in the northeast corner of the state covers 20 counties; Gainesville is the largest city. The district has attracted four Republican candidates and one independent, but not a single Democrat. The Republican primary is July 31 and the winner is all but ensured a House seat in November.
Pelosi has done her part to get the majority back, raising $26 million for the campaign committee alone through January and holding more than 400 events. The revenue total doesn't include fundraising for individual candidates and members.
The Democratic committee had $13.1 million cash on hand at the end of January, compared with Republicans' $17.6 million, but outside spending is well under way. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is up with ads in 11 districts around the country plus a commercial backing Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson in Utah.
"This is one dynamic that does keep me up at night," Israel said. "These super PACs." Those are political action committees that can raise and spend unlimited sums to support campaigns, though they must legally remain independent from the candidates they back.
That hasn't stopped the Democrats from trying to expand the field with an ambitious list targeting 36 races, including seven in California.
Helping Democrats was the retirement of three longtime Republican lawmakers in California - Elton Gallegly, Wally Herger and Jerry Lewis. The party is relying on top recruits Ami Bera, an Indian-American physician running for the second time against nine-term Republican Rep. Dan Lungren in the 7th Congressional District, which includes Elk Grove, and Mark Takano, a Japanese-American and trustee on the Riverside Community College Board seeking an open seat.
In the farm and ranching district that includes Modesto, the race is between former astronaut Jose Hernandez and Rep. Jeff Denham, a first-term Republican. Hernandez offers a personal story that Democrats hope will prove compelling with voters. As a child, he worked in the fields helping his Mexican immigrant parents, who were farm workers. He learned English at age 12, became and engineer and flew on the space shuttle.
Hernandez, who calls himself a local kid who made good, said he wants to "preserve the ability of folks to reach the American dream." The district is 40 percent Hispanic, with 25 percent of voting age. He's upbeat about his chances.
"As they say in Houston, failure is not an option," Hernandez said in an interview.

Gas prices have risen for 19 days straight to $3.69 a gallon and are predicted to increase through summer. CNBC?s Phil LeBeau reports.

Saudi bourse opens higher, boosted by oil price rise
Saudi shares opened higher led by gains in the petrochemical and banking sectors after oil prices rose on Friday.
Oil prices rose more than $1 per barrel on after the United Nation's nuclear watchdog said Iran has sharply stepped up work on uranium enrichment, putting Brent crude on track for a fifth straight weekly gain.
The all-share added 0.5 percent in early trading to 7,058 points and the petrochemical sector added 0.7 percent to 6,616 points.
Petrochemical giant Saudi Basic Indsutries (SABIC) cl 1.imbed5 percent.
The banking sector added 0.8 percent to 16,032 points.

Katy Perry Spotted Shooting New Video On Military Base

Katy Perry may be deep in shooting the video for her latest single, "Part of Me." The singer was spotted wearing a military uniform on the set of something this week.
In several photos that made their way online, Perry dons a cropped black wig and fatigues. One shot is of her standing next to male soldiers. Another features her is of her standing in a store. The last photo is of her in a pool with a soldier (still wearing the army garb). According to Perez Hilton, she is shooting the military-themed video at Marine Corps base Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California.
A rep for the base could not confirm reports that she is shooting there when contacted by MTV News. Meanwhile, her rep had not responded to our request for comment by press time.
Earlier this week, Perry teased that she was looking forward to hitting the set for the "Part of Me" video. "Holy power of the Grammy's, Part Of Me is already top 10 on itunes! U guys are killing it! NICE! Can't wait to shoot this video!" she tweeted on Monday, one day after she debuted the song at the Grammys.
The Teenage Dream: Complete Confection song is a bit darker than most Perry fans might be used to. The song is about the dissolution of a relationship, during which Perry sings scathing lines like "Days like this I want to drive away/ Pack bags and watch your shadow fade/ You chewed me up and spit me out like I was poison in your mouth/ You took my life, you drank me down/ But that was then and this is now."
And in what has been taken as a jab at her former hubby, Russell Brand, she adds, "You can keep the diamond ring/ It don't mean nothing anyway."

Clear iPhone app offers simple, gesture-based task management (Appolicious)
Realmac Software released Clear, a new iPhone to-do list manager to much anticipation today. The app not only requires iOS 5, but takes full advantage of the gesture system with its buttonless design. While it looks very appealing and is as simple as it gets, its complete independence from other core iOS features like push notifications or iCloud syncing, hold it back. Clear is, however, a solid option for those who really want to keep it simple.
Clear makes entering, deleting, reorganizing and creating tasks and lists effortless and, as mentioned, everything is accomplished with gestures. You pull down or pinch to add a new entry, tap and drag to reorder, swipe to delete and so on.
The app is three-tiered. The topmost layer shows all lists, the second specific lists and the third individual items. Again navigating between views is straightforward, intuitive and, you guessed it, gesture controlled. Clear is is brightly colored, highlighting the most urgent items in red. It?s a painless process to create something uncomplicated like a simple shopping list.
Right now it?s a form or function choice. There is no denying the retro-themed color scheme and boxy look are appealing, as is the idea of simplified task management. But, aside from the genuinely innovative gesture incorporation, Clear offers less than equally-simple apps especially Apple?s native Reminders. That said, it should be interesting to see where Realmac runs with this. With a little more iOS integration, the app has the potential to be a serious competitor in this ever-popular app category.

Panetta defends military budget plan
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is defending his department's slimmed-down, $614 billion budget plan, telling senators that it is time to step up and show they are serious about reducing the deficit.
In testimony prepared for a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing Tuesday, Panetta is warning lawmakers that budget cuts will hit all 50 states. Still, he says the reductions have been carefully planned, and there is little room for changes.
Panetta and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, can expect to meet resistance from lawmakers who have expressed reservations about gutting defense and eroding the country's national security. The proposed defense budget for the year beginning Oct. 1 includes $525.4 billion in base spending and another $88.5 billion for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The total is nearly $32 billion less than this year's budget.
"It was this Congress that mandated, on a bipartisan basis, that we reduce the defense budget, and we need your partnership to do this in a manner that preserves the strongest military in the world," Panetta said in the written testimony, which was obtained by The Associated Press. "This will be a test of whether reducing the deficit is about talk or action."
Defense officials have laid out plans to find about $260 billion in savings over the next five years, including moves to slash the size of the Army and Marine Corps, cut back on shipbuilding, and delay the purchase of some fighter jets and other weapons systems.
The plan also slashes war spending. Money for Iraq and Afghanistan will drop from $115 billion this year to $88.5 billion, with less than $3 billion spent for security in Iraq. It also cuts in half the amount spent on training and equipping Afghanistan's security forces, a crucial element to the U.S. effort to withdraw forces gradually and transfer security responsibility to the Afghans.
While military personnel still would get a 1.7 percent pay raise, retirees would get hit with a series of increases in health care fees, copays and deductibles. The impact would be greater on those who are under 65 and are likely to have another job, as well as on those who make more money.
Senators also complained Monday that President Barack Obama and his defense team have made no plans to deal with an additional $492 billion in across-the-board military cuts that will occur in January 2013 if Congress does not act to avoid them.
Panetta said that since it is now apparent what the current cuts will do, he hopes that Congress will be persuaded to avoid the additional 2013 reductions.
Dempsey, in his written testimony, said that even though there are fewer than 90,000 troops deployed in combat, compared with more than 200,000 just two years ago, the military must spend money to reset and restore itself. War-weary equipment must be replaced, weapons need to be modernized and troops need to be retrained, he said.
"We will have to do all of this in the context of a security environment that is different than the one we faced 10 years ago," Dempsey said. "We cannot simply return to the old way of doing things, and we cannot forget the lessons we have learned."

The Dangerous Pursuit of Pastoral Fame | Out of Ur | Conversations ...
The Celebrity Pastor certainly isn?t a new phenomenon. But the extent to which some take it today, I think, is. Yes, Spurgeon had his sermons published in the paper weekly. But can anyone really imagine him re-tweeting the fawning praises of his Twitter followers, or John Wesley selling tickets to his latest tour? Can anyone imagine Dwight Moody slapping his name on a couple ghostwritten books a year?
In other words, it seems as though we?ve thrown any reluctance over celebrity for our ministry endeavors out the window, and now many of us are now actively cultivating, pursuing, and?dare I say?grasping at the fame, increased money, and recognition that comes with hitting the big time in today?s ministry world.
And therein lies the danger and the challenge. Both for us personally and for the church as a whole.
When pastors start building their ?platform,? growing their influence, and raising their profile, it?s generally talked about in terms of expanding ministry reach, being a good steward of the talents God has given, and, always, increasing ?kingdom impact.? And while I have no doubt that many are humbly pursuing a God-given call to speak beyond the bounds of their local church community to a larger audience, I also suspect that for many, the motivations are somewhat more muddied, somewhat less altruistic.
For example, pastors who receive large salaries from their churches to produce sermons and resources for their community and then turn around and package and sell those same sermons and resources for personal profit need to rethink the model under which they are working. That kind of double dipping is not allowed in many other places in the world and probably shouldn?t be allowed in the church.
These last few years have seen a host of pastors and ministry leaders confronted with the challenges of a global audience and a personal brand. Some have done so with integrity, recognizing that their increased fame and recognition had become not only a danger to their own souls, but a hinderance to their church community, and they have wisely chosen to step out of one role so that they might more fully and faithfully pursue another.
Francis Chan is a great example. He took a lot of flack for leaving his mega-church pulpit. His motivation? Wanting ?to go somewhere where he is unknown.? It?s a study in contrasts to watch Chan, who feels ?led to greater obscurity? try to explain that to one of the more famous of today?s celebrity pastors.
How refreshing is it to hear someone in today?s world talk about pursuing obscurity?
The danger is not only to our own souls, that we would grasp after fame and abandon the quest for humility in our own lives. The danger is also that we would continue to hard-code the celebrity culture into our church communities. That we as a Church would continue to admire men and women not for their servant hearts but for their big audiences. That we see a day when every large and medium-sized ?market? in America is served by the franchises of the five or six top video venue pastors . . . and we would like it.
We must begin to separate celebrity from pastoral work. Local church ministry should not be a stepping stone to anything, least of all to fame and fortune. It should not be easier for CNN to get in touch with a pastor than for someone in his own congregation.
For me, I knew I was in danger when the stats on my blog became important to me. I would post something and then check obsessively over the next few days to see how many had read it, linked to it, commented on it. The balance had shifted from ?I want to say something about ministry/Jesus/the Gospel? to ?I want to be known as someone with something to say.? And when that shift occurs, no matter how much we say the name ?Jesus,? what we?re really pointing people to is ?me.? Jesus has become the platform on which we stand, not the Savior to which we point.
So, how do you know you are moving into the danger zone here? Is it only big time ministry leaders who are affected by this? Not by a long shot. The truth is, the size or scope of your ministry is irrelevant. In fact, sometimes it?s those of us who have the smallest ministries who actually have the biggest longings.
Some signs you might be in danger:
You look at the speaker roster for a conference and think, Why did he/she get an invite and not me?
You feel jealous of others because of the size or scope of their ministry.
You begin to dream that somehow ?hitting it big? (or even hitting it medium) will free you from ministry, or you begin to resent the small, mundane and unnoticed tasks of local church ministry.
You regularly Google yourself (please, no jokes in the comments.)
Your face appears on the front page of your church?s website.
You become a ?friend collector? who racks up the Facebook/Twitter followers with the idea that someday, you?ll be able to leverage that when you write that book you?ve been talking about writing forever.
You find yourself thinking more and more about how you can get your name ?out there.?
Please don?t think I?m condemning any pastor who has ever written a book or spoken at a conference. This is a very fuzzy area in which much grace needs to be extended. But if we never talk about the danger zone of self-promotion, we?re doing a disservice to ourselves and those we are called to serve. If we don?t think hard, on a personal level, about our need to be known by people beyond those we are directly in relationship with and service to, we run the risk of becoming men and women who use the people God has given us to serve as a means to our own self-gratifying and glorifying ends.
More and more, I?m trying to lean hard into the credo of John the Baptist: He must increase, and I must decrease. Maybe others can manage the trick of doing this while simultaneously ?building their brand.? If so, God bless them. I just know that I can?t. And I?m betting not many of us can.
