Pro-gun rights petition U.S. to deport CNN's Piers Morgan

LONDON (AP) ? Tens of thousands of people have signed a petition calling for British CNN host Piers Morgan to be deported from the U.S. over his gun control views.

Morgan has taken an aggressive stand for tighter U.S. gun laws in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting. Last week, he called a gun advocate appearing on his "Piers Morgan Tonight" show an "unbelievably stupid man."

Now, gun rights activists are fighting back. A petition created Dec. 21 on the White House e-petition website by a user in Texas accuses Morgan of engaging in a "hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution" by targeting the Second Amendment. It demands he be deported immediately for "exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens."

The petition has already hit the 25,000 signature threshold to get a White House response. By Monday, it had 31,813 signatures.

Morgan seemed unfazed ? and even amused ? by the movement.

In a series of Twitter messages, he alternately urged his followers to sign the petition and in response to one article about the petition said "bring it on" as he appeared to track the petition's progress.

"If I do get deported from America for wanting fewer gun murders, are there any other countries that will have me?" he wrote.

Cellular metabolism arms T cells to battle viruses and tumors

Dec. 24, 2012 ? New research demonstrates that the cellular metabolism of certain immune cells is closely linked to their function, which includes protecting against viral infections and the development of tumours.

Results recently published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine reveal the relationship between glucose metabolism in Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) and their ability to acquire the tools necessary to migrate and kill virally infected cells or tumour cells. CTL are generated in response to particular cues, which promote the acquisition of a range of cytotoxic tools that are used to kill target cells and provide the ability to migrate to the locations in the body where they are required, i.e. sites of inflammation. While glucose has often been considered simply as a fuel source, this work reveals that the nature of glucose metabolism in CTL is closely linked to key CTL functions.

"It was previously thought that high levels of glucose metabolism simply served to provide CTL with energy and the raw materials to facilitate cell growth," explains Dr Finlay, "but it is now clear that in CTL glucose metabolism can dictate the function of these important immune cells."

Dr David Finlay of the School of Biochemistry and Immunology, Trinity College Dublin, working with Prof Doreen Cantrell's laboratory in the University of Dundee, has established that the activities of two proteins, mTORC1 and HIF1?, are essential to maintain CTL glucose metabolism and normal CTL function. Disruption of mTORC1 or HIF1? dramatically reduces glucose utilisation in CTL while also disrupting the levels of key molecules that are required for normal migration and target cell killing. This work affords new insight into the relationship between cellular metabolism and cellular function in immune cells.

Inappropriate activation of CTL contributes to the pathology associated with a range of autoimmune diseases including Multiple Sclerosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Dr Finlay and Prof Cantrell's work reveals the potential for novel therapeutic strategies to disrupt CTL migration and cytotoxic function for the treatment autoimmune conditions.

The perfect church is beyond the pale of imperfect humanity

United States:?

The portly prophet G.K. Chesterton once observed that he knew the Catholic Church was for him because when he went into an Anglican or a Methodist church his umbrella was still at the back where he left it, but when he went to a Catholic church it had been stolen.

Oscar Wilde made a similar point when he quipped, "The Catholic Church is for saints and sinners, but for respectable people, the Church of England will do."

The whole problem with the Protestant Revolution is that Christians pulled out of the Catholic Church looking for a perfect church, and they've been pulling out of their own churches ever since ? still looking to either find or create a perfect church, and that church is St. Utopia's.

Here's what St. Utopia's looks like: it has a vibrant, good-looking pastor who, like Mary Poppins, is practically perfect in every way. They have a terrific youth ministry; worship is either a sublime liturgy or a terrifically relevant blend of hip-hop, youth culture, and Hollywood. They minister to the poor; they've got a wonderful outreach program. They have mission trips to the developing world. The "welcome team" makes everyone feel at home with gracious grins and soothing smiles.

It's a growing church. The fellowship and the friendship seem so real ?so caring ?so loving. They've gathered lots of people who have shopped around for the perfect church and settled at St. Utopia's. It's just what church should be right?

Maybe. Maybe not. I hate to pop balloons, but in my experience of over fifty years as a Christian, when it comes to churches and church leaders, things are almost always not what they seem. And the more perfect they seem, the greater the illusion.

Americans, in particular, are suckers for the snappy, snazzy world of "successful" churches. We're taken in by the slick shucksters of religion who create that wonderful feel-good church that is very seductive. It's part of our Protestant culture. One of the pastimes of Protestant America is to create new religions. We're always trying to improve the product and come up with one that is the latest, the best, and the most wonderful.

As a result our churches have become ever more artificial, shallow, and distant from the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Conservative House members being punished by GOP leadership?

This transcript is automatically generated

Actually yes -- were ousted by speaker John Boehner from key committee posts in the house for the conservative views and votes against the party leadership now.

The speaker's office -- in fact -- this was an act of retaliation saying their conservatism.

Has nothing to do with it and that the decision was based on quote a range of factors.

And here to explain what exactly they think is going on and why Kansas congressman.

Tim -- camp is with us and from Michigan we have congressman -- here.

All right.

Congressman.

Heels can't let let me start with you because you're quoted as saying in fact you believe this was directly related to -- that you would give -- you brought this up -- conference yesterday.

What -- you told in conference.

We knew we were ignored I ask for a list of the votes by which they used to make this decision indeed there was a list.

A litmus test and that it wasn't provided yet and I think many my colleagues are outraged because the boat is.

Sacred I mean we'll turn that over to anybody in Washington and clearly -- voted against the debt deal I voted against a number of these budgets have voted against these.

Bills that they didn't solve our spending problem and that's where but most critical were repent in Washington but that's -- I -- my folks and we have to change Washington.

Before changes -- and then now we get punished by being taken off committees that that are very important Kansas.

We -- basically saying that this is a result of your conservatism and this is only happening and I also read tonight that.

This speaker said hey there might be more of this we're going to be watching your votes closely with that said.

Yes yes that was said John and I was very disappointed in that and it was pretty clear that there may be more and that.

That's not the way around the house and frankly I usually voting its leadership as when they did things that we're not conservative -- we can disagree on strategy.

Disagree on tactics but we can't disagree on the fact is we're spending too much money in Washington were -- too much money we're about ready to jump over fiscal cliff we got this huge.

Sixteen point three trillion dollar debt and their focus on a few people that have pointed out that.

Problem congressman Marshall what is your interpretation of all of this and what do you say to the speaker who is denying that in fact the votes -- and do -- this.

Well thanks for having me on Jon and it's it's pretty clear there was a score card.

They haven't denied that.

But they they continue to insist that wasn't the reason doesn't make any sense to me.

If there was a score card and and we've heard there is and show it to us let us see what the score card says.

And I will bet that the reason they don't want to show it I think it's pretty obvious.

That if you were fiscally irresponsible you were docked on that scorecard you're actually marked down in the Republican conference for being fiscally responsible.

And we were sent here to represented the American people the vast majority of Americans want us to come here and work together to balance the budget.

Yeah congressman -- what I'm a conservative -- even registered conservative in New York I'm not a registered Republican what.

-- and I I believe the it with the Tea Party in limited government I think the argument ought not be about which revenues are gonna raise but it ought to be about.

Cutting spending in Washington so as a conservative than any other conservatives in the country what should they had to be thinking at this point.

In terms of are conservatives being punished in the house because if they are I have a big problem -- that.

And Sean here's what I think is gonna happen I think the efforts underway we may have.

Have members of leadership talk about tax increases.

Friday I released a video I meant it and reaffirm my pledge not to raise taxes less than one business day later is when are received word I've been removed from a committee.

I think there's the effort there's the desire raise taxes in Washington DC and I expect them the president of the United States expect that of Harry Reid.

But I expect Republicans who actually reaffirm their pledge and hold to the pledge of 238 -- what said don't raise tax that -- that's where they're headed.

put sixteen.

Republican congressman.

Could hold up the speakership of congressman Boehner is there a growing movement congressman a -- in the Republican caucus.

Well I think there's a lot of unrest right now a lot of on these.

The speaker may have miscalculated here thinking in that it's just going to be a few of us who are concerned about it.

But it's clear he he made a threat to the rest of the conference and people are taking that very well.

And I've heard from people high up in the ranks who are saying look this is not the right way to run a conference.

And so I think this is gonna backfire on -- speaker Boehner and people around a conference like this have to be very careful all right gentlemen both do you thank you then continue to watch the story -- reach out to leadership and see if they'll come on and answer some of the questions about this and --

Get Rid of the Debt Ceiling: Alice Rivlin | Daily Ticker - Yahoo! Finance

When Federal Reserve officials meet next week for their regularly scheduled policy meeting, they will be considering lots of economic data including Friday's stronger-than-expected jobs report. The unemployment rate last month fell to 7.7%, the lowest rate in four years. November payrolls rose 146,000?about 50% more than forecast.

Alice Rivlin, former vice chair of the Fed, says the jobs report is reassuring but it does not portend a change in Fed policy.

"The Fed has been communicating that it's going to continue its current policy," Rivlin tells The Daily Ticker. "It's going to buy bonds and keep a low interest rate for the foreseeable future. I don't see why this jobs number is going to influence that."

Rivlin says she would probably vote in favor of the Fed's current policy of low rates and bond purchases if she was still vice chair. But she does have doubts about it.

"I don't think [Fed policy] is dangerous?.but I don't think it's doing much marginal good," she notes.

Rivlin says the problem for the U.S. economy is the partisan gridlock in Washington. The polarization among lawmakers has prevented them from doing what they need to do.

"We need to get our political house in order, make a decision about the fiscal cliff and stabilize the debt?that's the most important thing," says Rivlin, who once headed the White House Budget Office as well as the Congressional Budget Office. Once a good fiscal policy is in place, then "monetary policy can begin to retrench, as the unemployment rate comes down," Rivlin says.

In the meantime, the clock is ticking on the fiscal cliff -- i.e. when massive spending cuts and tax hikes are scheduled to take effect in the new year. Rivlin also says the debt ceiling, which has become another point of contention in Washington, should be eliminated for good.

"Get rid of the debt ceiling," she says. "It's a totally artificial thing. When you vote for spending and you vote for revenues there's an implicit debt number there, but it shouldn't be used as a hammer over the head of the president or anybody else?..the debt ceiling has nothing to do with the rising debt."

Subprime financing on the rise in new car sales, leasing too

buying new jeep wrangler

We all remember the financial crisis that began several years back. At its core was a splurge of subprime lending for housing loans. The housing bubble burst, triggering a collapse of the mortgage-backed securities market. Apparently, those types of loans still exist in the automotive industry, and the market share for these types of "nonprime, subprime, and deep subprime," loans has grown 13.6 percent compared to the third quarter a year ago.

According to an Automotive News report, high-risk lending expanded to 24.8 percent of total loans in Q3, up from 21.9 percent for this time last year. As this level increased, average credit scores of borrowers dropped to 755, down from 763 a year ago. In that time, the average financing amount increased $90 per vehicle, to $25,963.

At 818, Volvo maintains the highest per-owner credit score, while Mitsubishi has the lowest, at 694. The highest rate of borrowers was at Toyota, with 14 percent of the market, followed by Ford with 13.1 percent and Chevrolet at 11.1.

Part of the growth in lending is the willingness to offer longer-term loans. Dealerships are starting to offer 60, 72 and 84 month borrowing periods. Carmakers are reluctant to do so, as it takes the customer off the market too long, yet the seven-year loan period is the fastest-growing category in automotive borrowing.

It all points to an industry that is eager to maintain the wave of recovery even at the risk of potentially aggressive lending practices.
